Apple Watch - Authentication Troubleshooting

If you have just installed the Peoplesafe app and see a message on your Apple Watch saying "We can't authenticate you, try logging in on the iPhone first," don't worry. This usually happens because your login credentials haven't finished syncing from your iPhone to your Watch yet.

Follow these steps to get your Watch app connected.

Step 1: Check your iPhone login

Before the Watch can see your account, you must be actively logged into the Peoplesafe app on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Peoplesafe app on your iPhone.

  2. If you aren't logged in, enter your credentials now.

  3. If you are already logged in, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Manually sync credentials

If the error persists on your Watch, you can "force" the login details to move across using the manual sync button.

  1. In the Peoplesafe iPhone app, tap on Settings (usually the cog icon).

  2. Look for the button labelled Share Credentials.

  3. Tap it once. This pushes your authentication data directly to your Apple Watch.

Step 3: Refresh the Watch app

  1. Go back to your Apple Watch.

  2. Tap the [Reauthenticate] button on the error screen.

  3. The app should now recognise your account and open the main interface.

Troubleshooting the "Apple Watch Unavailable" error

If you tap Share Credentials and see an error saying "Apple Watch Unavailable," it means the iPhone cannot "find" the Watch app to send the data. This is usually a temporary connection glitch between iOS and watchOS.

To resolve this, try these steps in order:

  • Wake the Watch: Ensure your Apple Watch screen is on and unlocked. If the Watch is "asleep" or on its charger, the sync may fail.

  • Open the Watch app: Open the Peoplesafe app on your Apple Watch so it is visible on the screen, then try tapping Share Credentials on your iPhone again.

  • Toggle Bluetooth: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth, turn it Off, wait five seconds, and turn it back On. Wait for the Watch to reconnect, then try the sync again.

  • Restart both devices: If the "Unavailable" message persists, a quick restart of both your iPhone and Apple Watch will reset the communication bridge between them.

Still having trouble?

If the error remains, please ensure:

  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi: Both are enabled on your iPhone and Watch.

  • iCloud Keychain: This must be turned on in your iPhone settings (Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Passwords & Keychain).
