Android Discreet Alarms: Understanding Your Options

At Peoplesafe, your safety is our priority. Our app includes a crucial "discreet alarm" feature designed to allow you to signal for help quickly and subtly in an emergency.

However, modern Android smartphones, including Samsung devices, also have a built-in "Emergency SOS" function. While both aim to provide rapid assistance, they operate differently and can sometimes conflict.

Peoplesafe vs. Android Emergency SOS

The key difference lies in their activation methods:

  • Android Emergency SOS: Activated by rapidly pressing your power button five or more times. This automatically dials emergency services (e.g., 999). Behavior varies by phone.
  • Peoplesafe Discreet Alarm: When set to "power button presses," our discreet alarm uses a specific sequence of screen flashes linked to the power button, designed for intentional activation.

Why They Might Conflict

Both features use the power button, leading to potential issues:

  • System Priority: Android's Emergency SOS is a core system function. Rapid power button presses will always prioritise it over any app's custom gesture.
  • Accidental Emergency Calls: If your Peoplesafe alarm is activated with presses rapid enough to mimic the SOS trigger, you could accidentally dial 999/112.

How to Avoid the Conflict

To ensure your Peoplesafe alarm works effectively and prevent accidental emergency calls:

Disable Android Emergency SOS

On some Android devices, you can disable Emergency SOS automatic calling.

  • To check: Go to Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS. Look for options to "Use Emergency SOS" or "Call emergency services." If you can toggle these off, great. If not, proceed to Option 3.

However, many phones, including Samsung, may not allow full disablement as it's considered a mandatory safety feature, in this case consider the following options:

Option 1: Choose the Shake Function in Peoplesafe App

This is the most reliable option. Instead of power button presses, set your Peoplesafe app to activate the alarm via a shake gesture. This avoids any conflict with Android's Emergency SOS.

Option 2: Use Peoplesafe ARC as Android's Emergency Number

If you can't disable Android's automatic SOS calling, you can direct it to Peoplesafe's Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC):

  • How to: Go to Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS. Look for "Change emergency number" or "Custom number" and enter your Peoplesafe ARC Alarm Line: +442037500999.
  • Important: This routes Android's SOS to Peoplesafe. Your phone's direct 999 dialing will still work. Use this if you primarily rely on Peoplesafe for emergencies.

Option 3: Dedicated Bluetooth Button

For ultimate discretion and reliability, Peoplesafe offers dedicated Bluetooth panic buttons. These small, wearable devices pair with your app for single-press alarm activation.

  • Benefits: No conflict with phone buttons, instant and discreet activation, highly reliable.
  • Contact: Speak to your Peoplesafe Account Manager for details on dedicated Bluetooth buttons.

By understanding these options and choosing the best activation method, you can ensure your PeopleSafe alarm is ready when needed.
